Outdoor Lighting - Taking the Time and Extra Money to Do It Right
Most
of us prefer entertaining guest outdoors which is why we tend to have
decks, porches, and patios adorned with seating areas that can
accommodate large gatherings. But just as with the interior of
your home, the outside space needs proper illumination to help set the
space apart and provide light for activities. The right outdoor lighting fixtures can help enhance the decorative appeal of any exterior space while providing adequate lighting for safety.
Some
of the most important outdoor lights to have, irrespective of whether
or not you have a deck or other entertaining area, are those that
illuminate the entryway. If you have a covered porch, then
anything from a simple flush mount fixture to a more lavish exterior hanging lantern or chandelier will illuminate the space and welcome guests into your home.
For those without covered entryways, an outdoor wall lantern
is a common fixture that can add both safety and decorative appeal to
your home when chosen properly. Be sure that the lantern is
designed for exterior use as it will need a finish that will be able to
weather the elements. A single lantern should be approximately
1/3 the total height of your doorway. If you opt for a pair of
matching lanterns or exterior wall sconces, then they should be
approximately 1/4 of the total height of your doorway.
Other
than the entryway, you want to study your exterior space carefully and
decide where you spend the most time. Then, think about where
extra light will be needed to complete various exterior
activities. Deck lanterns can provide general illumination for an
area but you may also want to consider using exterior and portable
table and floor lamps. Suitable for outside use, these convenient
light fixtures can add task lighting for things like playing card or
board games, reading, or just adding some illumination for a simple
conversation with friends and family.
Outdoor
lighting fixtures should match the overall style of your home and the
outdoor furniture. Exterior lights are available in just about
any size, shape, or style imaginable so don’t give up if you have
trouble finding the perfect fixtures on the first try. Just as
with interior light fixtures, the finish is very important so remember
to coordinate it with the surrounding décor and other light
fixtures for a more complete and unified decorative effect. By
having the right exterior lighting for your outdoor gatherings, they
will be safer, more enjoyable, and of course—brighter!
